Late Dr. Surendra Nath Sen (1865-1945)
Dr. Surendra Nath Sen was the nephew of the renowned social reformer of Calcutta, Sri. Brahmanand Keshav Chandra Sen. After completing his early education from Jaipur. He obtained his M.B.B.S. Degree from the famous Calcutta Medical College, and came to Kanpur in the third quarter of 1800s. Dr. Sen was popularly known as the Messiah of the poor for his boundless generosity and compassion.
He never charged any money from his poor patients. The Hindu orphanage was built on the piece of land donated by him as was the Indian Medical Association Hall. He established the Aadarsh Banga Vidhyalaya on Mall Road Kanpur to promote anglo - vernacular education among boys. Not only did he donate land for the college, but also had the main building constructed. He was compassionate towards all living beings. He established the “Jeev Daya Mandal” an institution which helped in building drinking water facilities for animals in the city.
He also built the only Bengali library in Kanpur named ‘Jogendro Smriti’ in the name of his father Mr. Jogendra Nath Sen in Karachi Khana Lane beside Mall Road in 1883. He was also the Founder President of Banga Sahitya Samaj. The College remains forever indebted to its founding forefather.
